# Jaw Thrust

The jaw thrust is a first aid technique used to open the airway of an unconscious person, especially when a spinal injury is suspected. It moves the jaw forward without tilting the head.

**What is the jaw thrust technique in first aid and when should it be used?**

## Symptoms that may indicate the need to perform a jaw thrust:

- Unconsciousness
- No normal breathing
- Suspected spinal or neck injury
- Gurgling or obstructed breathing
- No chest movement

## How to perform a jaw thrust:

1. Kneel at the top of the person's head.
2. Place your hands on either side of their head, with fingers under the jawbones.
3. Gently push the lower jaw upwards and forward.
4. Avoid tilting the head or moving the neck.
5. Check for normal breathing and begin further first aid if needed.
